WIP Space Residencies

About

WIP Space Residencies offer a free 24/7 studio space for 3 months or 6 months to creative practitioners. WIP Space Residencies support the participating practitioners by offering space and time to produce new work as well as a public platform to share and develop their ideas.

We would like to prioritise those who are in most need of a studio. We ask those applying to reflect on the opportunities that have been available to you in education, income, overall financial security, occupation, living conditions, resources, and opportunities afforded to you within society.

We offer 2 individual studio spaces (1 studio for the 3 month, 1 studio for the 6 month) with an adjoining shared project space. The studio space are suitable for most practices apart from any processes needing hot work or firing.

  •  Each studio space approx. 6 square meters / 65 sq ft

  • Shared project space approx. 18 square meters / 193 sq ft

The opportunity is for all creative practices in:

  • Art

  • Design

  • Literature

  • Architecture

  • Performance

  • Creative technology

We offer the space with no strings attached, there is no expectation for the creative practitioner to add to our public programming and we have no funding reporting requirements. You would be part of a studio community with invites to our drinks, potlucks and other social events. Plus there are regular exhibitions and events held in our Steam Works gallery.

However, we are aware that some practitioners may want to host workshops / exhibitions / events in the adjoining project space to the studio.

We are happy to support applicants in applying for funding and can offer mentoring, publicity, and installation support if you do choose to take this on. If you apply for funding we would be able to offer 1 hour weekly mentoring. Unfortunately, we cannot provide financial assistance at this stage as we are an artist run studio space without funding or other backing.

Requirements:

  • Free Application

  • Artists will find their own accommodation for the duration

  • If you do want to host workshops / exhibitions / events this would be supported from the start of your residency, however we would ask that 8 weeks’ notice is provided for them so WIP Space can provide a good time frame for marketing them

  • You will be required to sign a peppercorn studio Licence agreement (for the free studio space)

What you get:

  • 24/7 studio space in a new creative studio complex which also hosts Steam Works Gallery

  • Free Wifi

  • Heating and utilities included

  • Access to a shared project space (we expect the project space to change to adapt to the needs of both residences, being open to collaborations, exhibitions, readings, or extensions of workspace)

  • Access to a meeting room

  • Support and mentoring to develop for funding bids

  • Studio Accessibility details here
